From Bangkok to Foshan: A Teen’s Comeback on the Field

2025-07-18

This summer in Foshan, a remarkable young visitor arrived—a 15-year-old football-loving teen named Thomas, who had been battling a long-standing ankle injury. For nearly two years, the pain had kept him away from the field and limited his ability to move freely. After multiple

consultations in Thailand’s hospitals failed to provide a clear path forward, Thomas and his family made a life-changing decision: to travel across borders to China for ankle reconstruction surgery.

Seamless Arrival,

Reassuring Care

Thomas’s right ankle had been a source of chronic pain and instability since a sports injury two years ago. While several hospitals in Thailand had recommended surgery, the proposed plans were complex and posed a risk to his growth plate—leaving his parents hesitant.

It wasn’t until a friend introduced us to Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital,” said Thomas’s mother, Ms. Sun. “After two online consultations, Dr. Miao Guiqiang quickly pinpointed the key issues and proposed a tailored surgical plan. His clarity and professionalism gave us confidence.”

As soon as the family stepped off the plane, a welcome sign from Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital’s International Health Care Unit was already waiting. From airport pickup and private car service to full English-language support and prearranged treatment coordination, every detail helped bridge cultural and logistical gaps.

Martin, Thomas’s father, an English teacher who has worked across several countries, was impressed:

“Chinese doctors’ professionalism and the hospital’s international-standard coordination far exceeded our expectations.”It immediately put our minds at ease.”

Precision in Every Millimeter

Dr. Miao Guiqiang, Director of Sports Medicine at Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital, led the team in crafting a tailor-made plan for Thomas. Imaging showed inflammatory synovial overgrowth, a loose bone spur, and ligament laxity in the teenager’s ankle.

Dr. Miao stressed:

“When performing surgery on adolescents, it's crucial to repair the injury while protecting the growth plate.”

Using advanced arthroscopic techniques, the team inserted a 4mm scope to accurately locate and remove the inflamed tissue and spur. Absorbable anchors were used to anatomically reconstruct the anterior talofibular ligament, while a medial collateral ligament reinforcement was performed. Bone spurs were shaved off, and loose bodies were cleared from the joint. The entire procedure, lasting just over an hour, not only relieved the pain but also preserved the possibility of returning to the field.

Ms. Sun. said:

“Before the surgery, Dr. Miao explained the surgical principles in simple, easy-to-understand language. He clearly outlined the condition of the lesion, the operational procedures, and the key milestones for postoperative recovery. This professional confidence was truly reassuring,"

Comfort Beyond the Operating Room

Before the operation, Thomas admitted he was nervous about the anesthesia.

What I remember most before the anesthesia was the nurse’s calm and gentle eyes. She explained every step softly, and when I woke up, there was only a slight soreness—it was far easier than I imagined.”

This sense of care extended well into recovery: 24-hour postoperative monitoring, personalized physical therapy plans, and seamless insurance support from the international service team.

“We were initially concerned about the cost of overseas treatment,” Ms. Sun shared. “But the hospital team helped us prepare the required documents and submit our claim—greatly easing the financial burden.”

By the third day after surgery, Thomas was already standing with crutches. Asked what he looked forward to most, he replied with a bright smile:

“I’m counting down to my 16th birthday—that’s when I hope to make my comeback on the field!”

Gratitude in a Father’s Song

This journey of trust across countries was capped by a touching gesture. Thomas’s father, Martin, composed an original song for the medical team. In its lyrics, he sings:

“For all the work they do, making dreams come true.”

“If any of my friends ever consider seeking medical care abroad,” Martin added, “I’d recommend this hospital without hesitation.”

Thomas’s journey is just one of many that reflect the global vision of Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital’s international medical services. As Dr. Miao puts it:

“Our goal is not only to treat the injury, but to restore vitality, confidence, and dignity to each patient’s life.”

When Thomas takes his first steps back onto the football field, this cross-border healing journey will continue—not only in memory, but in every stride of a dream once paused, now renewed.
