Scoliosis

Scoliosis Overview

Scoliosis, also known as spinal curvature, is a structural abnormality where the spine curves in three-dimensional space. The diagnostic criterion is a Cobb angle of ≥10° measured on a standing full-length spine X-ray. The curvature may be left or right, often accompanied by vertebral rotation and thoracic deformity.

The main categories include:

Idiopathic scoliosis: the most common type (accounting for about 80%), mostly occurring during the growth period of adolescents, and the etiology is not fully understood.

Congenital scoliosis: It is caused by abnormal formation or segmentation of vertebral body and is present at birth.

Neuromuscular scoliosis: secondary to neuromuscular diseases such as cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury.

Degenerative scoliosis: caused by degeneration of intervertebral discs and joints in adulthood.

This condition not only compromises postural symmetry but may, in severe cases, impair cardiopulmonary function, cause pain, or lead to progressive deformities.

Early screening and professional evaluation (including imaging studies and regular follow-ups) are essential. Treatment plans should be tailored to the degree of scoliosis, progression risk, and patient age, ranging from observation and physical therapy to brace interventions and surgical procedures.

Surgical treatment of severe scoliosis

A year and a half ago, Indian boy Daravani underwent surgery at Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, gaining 24 centimeters in height. Recently, he returned to the hospital for follow-up examinations, with all key indicators including deformity correction, spinal fusion outcomes, and cardiac and pulmonary function recovery remaining within normal ranges.
