Beyond Surgery: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Complex Pituitary Tumors

2025-12-25

Recently, I saw a patient in my clinic with a giant pituitary tumor. The tumor had already caused blindness in the right eye. The patient had previously undergone two surgeries at well-known hospitals in Shanghai to remove the tumor. However, after surgery, there was residual tumor, and the patient was not offered any follow-up treatment or guidance.

Over the next seven to eight years, the tumor regrew and enlarged, compressing the brainstem and frontal lobe, and eventually forming a large cystic lesion. The mass became so extensive that it pressed on the optic nerve and optic chiasm, making it impossible to distinguish the nerve boundaries.

The patient refused another operation and pleaded for CyberKnife treatment instead. I found myself in a difficult position. The patient and her family said to me, “You are the most renowned CyberKnife expert in China — there must be a way.”

I introduced them to Professor Zhao and Professor Wang, two of China's leading experts in pituitary surgery from Huashan Hospital's "Golden Pituitary" team, hoping they would consider another surgery there. Yet, the patient remained firmly opposed to any surgical option due to her traumatic experiences.

Seeing her helplessness and absolute trust, I decided to draw on my experience treating over 12,000 patients with CyberKnife, determined to find a safe and effective way to help her. I hoped that advanced CyberKnife technology could once again demonstrate its power — bringing real benefit and hope to patients facing even the most challenging tumors.
