In Professor Tang Rijie's view, the fight against cancer is a "war." Overcoming it requires not only advanced tools and accurate anticipation but also superior strategy.
In the Third Oncology Department, Professor Tang organizes multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations daily. The medical team, including surgeons, physicians, interventional radiologists, pathologists, imaging specialists, and nursing staff, gathers in the office for case discussions.

The large TV screen displays various examination reports and images of the patients. Each attending physician presents their patient's specific condition. Professor Tang sometimes takes the mouse, scrolling through the images on the large screen, deliberating and consulting with the team repeatedly before making the final decision on the optimal treatment plan.
"In cancer treatment, it is essential to plan and rationally arrange treatment methods. We hope that from the very first treatment, the cancer can be effectively controlled, aiming to improve the patient's quality of life and prolong survival," says Professor Tang

Professor Tang has adhered to this workflow for over 30 years since beginning his medical practice. He emphasizes that cancer treatment is particularly complex and individualized. "We advocate for personalized management under standardized treatment guidelines. This has two meanings: first standardize, then personalize. Standardization refers to the treatment recommended for a specific disease based on all current research evidence, grounded in evidence-based medicine. On this foundation, personalized management is applied, such as deciding which drugs to use and their dosages."
Over 30 Years Dedicated to Minimally Invasive Interventional Oncology, Exploring Treatments Suitable for Chinese Liver Cancer Patients
Having entered interventional medicine in 1993, Professor Tang has witnessed minimally invasive interventional therapy become one of the most important methods for treating liver cancer, especially advanced stages. Portal vein tumor thrombus is among the most challenging conditions in liver cancer. To tackle it, Professor Tang leverages the advantages of multidisciplinary collaboration, bringing together experts from various fields for discussion and frequently shares advanced experiences and clinical outcomes at renowned domestic and international interventional forums.

Patients travel from afar—Xinjiang, Liaoning, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi, Hainan, and other parts of China—seeking a lifeline and requesting Professor Tang's help.

His approach of heartfelt communication with patients has earned Professor Tang significant trust. He summarizes one key insight: "A patient's trust comes from the doctor's every action—including how the doctor conducts consultations, ward rounds, speaks, and acts. Patients can perceive this."

Utilizing medical skill and compassion to restore hope in cancer patients! On the wards of the Third Oncology Department, Professor Tang and his team face one arduous "battle" after another.
